RYA Day Skipper with Bacchus Yachting & Sea School
Whether you own a yacht, would like to charter a yacht for a holiday or simply want to learn a new skill, our RYA Day Skipper course is the perfect challenge for you! The 5-day practical course requires you to plan an entire trip. You’ll cover lots of elements, including familiarising yourself with the yacht, organising your crew, forecasting weather, navigation and pilotage plans for the best course to steer. You will start your practical course building on the theoretical knowledge gained from the 5 days of RYA Day Skipper Theory taken beforehand.
Evenings are normally spent enjoying a meal onboard with the team/crew and taking in the relaxing environment afloat. We go out one evening ashore for a team meal in one of the fabulous local ports. On at least one of the nights you will also try out some night sailing, which is always very popular and an interesting experience. A night sail is an essential practice if you end up late back into port one day and lose light, picking out those flashing lights is essential to practice to guide you home. On this Day Skipper course, you will stay aboard the yacht so that you really do live and understand the whole yachting experience.
We’re a Recognised RYA Training Centre
Where do we train? Based in Gosport in the heart of the Solent, this location gives access to the whole of this coastal area. The Solent has long been a magnet for the experienced sailor in search of navigational challenges – after all, this is home to the world-famous Cowes Week Regatta. It’s also provided some of the best British sailing teams and sailors. This beautiful sailing area provides plenty of opportunity for more gentle sailing for those learning the ropes! With the beautiful coastline, rocky inlets, fantastic mooring points, villages and fully equipped marinas, you can soon see why the Solent is a world-renowned sailing tidal mecca.
The RYA Day Skipper Course & Our Yachts
Not only do we have highly experienced qualified instructors, we also have a fleet of well-maintained performance modern yachts. We have a Beneteau First 36.7, our gorgeous Dufour 405 Grand Large, our Legend 33 and we have just purchased a very spacious and luxurious Bavaria Cruiser 37.
So, now you have an idea of the yachts, all fully equipped with heating, extra comfort additions, modern electronics, added to quality instruction and great venues that we run our courses from, here is an outline of the RYA Day Skipper Course:
Day Skipper Theory (5 Days)
The Day Skipper Theory course is a comprehensive introduction to cruising for inexperienced skippers and is an essential preparation for our RYA Day Skipper Practical course. In the UK the theory courses are usually run over a variety of dates and split weekend options throughout the year from our classroom in Gosport.
Day Skipper Practical (5 Days)
On the RYA Day Skipper Practical course, you will gain further experience through planning and completing passages, including a night experience. You can also gain your ICC (International Certificate of Competence). You will also practice lots of close quarter handling skills and mooring in a range of marinas. Again, these courses can be spread over two weekends or as one 5 day continuous duration. You will stay onboard our yachts and stopover in different marinas. We have lots of options, so speak to us about anything specific you require.
After Day Skipper – What Next?
Once you have your RYA Day Skipper you can charter any yacht and enjoy sailing! Yacht charter is a perfect opportunity to get away from the crowded beaches, discover isolated coves only accessible by the sea and build on your skippering experience either in the UK or abroad. Bacchus Yachting charter out their yachts in Gosport and the Solent.
After your Day Skipper Course and skippering practice, we also run the advanced Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster courses from Gosport. These courses are essential for those that want to carve out a career in sailing or those that have gained skippering experience after their Day Skipper course and are wanting to broaden their horizons – ready to venture on longer trips day or night. Customers will often take their VHF Radio course with us to gain their license to operate the SRC/VHF Radio onboard. They also really enjoy our Mileage Builder Weekends and Close Quarters Berthing and Boat Handling courses, which help them further their skills and confidence as a skipper.
